Our dairy farmers contribute to this by reducing energy consumption and carbon emissions and by generating sustainable energy and growing in a climate-neutral way.

‘The floor is heated with heat from the milk’
Dairy farmer Hans Mensink is known for his sustainable energy initiatives. Saving energy and generating sustainable energy are ‘his thing’. ‘We started by installing 850 solar panels on the shed and machinery hall in 2018 and in 2020 we increased that number by a further 300 panels. We consume around 100,000 kilowatt for the farm and two homes annually and sell the remaining energy.’
Residual heat to the home
Electric boilers were installed in 2019 for personal use as well as for the farm. They also installed a system enabling heat released when cooling the milk in the milk cooling tank to be used for other purposes. The milk is cooled from 37°C to 3°C and the residual heat is transported via pipes under the road to their home, around 50 metres from the shed. ‘Our home has underfloor heating that’s heated via heat from our milk.’
